New Bedford distinguishes itself by having a signature parade on July 5, not the 4th of July! Celebrating the independence and culture of Cape Verde, the Cape Verdean Recognition Committee sponsors the annual parade that attracts nationally renown bands and attractions. This year's event will be bigger and better than before, honoring the Cape Verdean crew and captain of the Charles W. Morgan.

With the last whaling ship in existence in port for the parade, 2014 is an extra-special year, for raising monies throughout the year to pay for related expenses and to provide scholarships for deserving students!

This year, an urgent request implores community volunteers who can help to keep the parade moving along at a steady pace. No experience is needed. You must be able to walk at least two miles and sometimes at a quick rate. Volunteers will be provided with a free official t-shirt for the rain or shine attraction and a thank you dinner at a later date! To help, please call Diane Gomes at (508) 944-7625.
