A highlight of New Bedford's Independence Day weekend is the Cape Verdean Recognition Day Parade.

The parade is a salute to the Cape Verdean culture, its people and that nation's Independence gained in 1975.  Saturday's parade featured floats, drum and bugle corps, local elected officials, youth groups and much more.

Denise Henderson grew up in New Bedford and moved to Virginia 13 years ago, but she makes it a point to come back home every year during the first week in July.....

This year's parade honored the late Thomas Lopes of New Bedford.

Lopes passed away last September at the age of 70.  He's a former State Representative, community volunteer and publisher of the CVN News.
