Both Charlie Baker and Martha Coakley say they support the SouthCoast Rail Project, but they differ on how to pay for the estimated $2 billion project.

During a debate Friday at UMass Dartmouth, Democrat Coakley expressed her support for a plan approved by Gov. Patrick and the Legislature, to pay for major transportation projects...

But Republican Charlie Baker says he opposes the gas indexing plan...

Baker says he favors adding money to the budget each year to complete SouthCoast Rail, rather than automatic tax increases to fund major projects. There's a question on the ballot this fall that would repeal the gas indexing plan.

On another issue, both Coakley and Baker said they support the facility under construction in the South End being named the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal.

Friday's debate was sponsored by the SouthCoast Alliance, a group of media and community organizations.
