Authorities say a Brockton boy trying out the inline skates he got for his 12th birthday has been struck and killed by a truck.

The Plymouth district attorney's office says Nazair Nunes-Escobar was struck at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday by an 18-wheeler hauling scrap metal.

The driver stopped at the scene and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

Nazair was remembered by friends and neighbors as a friendly, spirited, funny and athletic child.

About 50 people held a vigil for the boy on Thursday night.
