CHILMARK — The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called in by police in Chilmark on Tuesday after a marine marker flare was discovered.

The marker is believed to have washed ashore after it failed to activate in the water. The flares are used for training purposes or during search and rescue missions to mark a location on the water. According to a report by Cape Cod Today, it's not uncommon for the markers to fail and then wash ashore.

The report says that the state troopers determined the best place for the detonation would be at Lucy Vincent Beach. After the beach was closed to the public, the marker was taken to the site and detonated.
