(Smyrna, TN) -- Fire officials says one person is dead after a Navy Blue Angels plane crashed this afternoon in Tennessee. The Rutherford County Department said one person was killed but did not say if it was the pilot. The crash happened near the town of Smyrna in the central part of the state. The F/A-18 Hornet crashed shortly after takeoff for a practice flight. The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform during the Great Tennessee Air Show this weekend.

Earlier in they day, an Air Force Thunderbirds plane crashed near Colorado Springs, Colorado. The pilot in that crash was unharmed. Before today, the last fatality in a Blue Angels crash was in 2007 at an air show in South Carolina.
