The City of New Bedford has announced that there will be beach closures on Thursday.

Tower 1 and Tower 2 beaches and O’Toole’s Beach along East Rodney French Boulevard will be closed to swimming.

Squid Beach at the end of Aquidneck Street on West Rodney French Boulevard will also be closed.

The Health Department says the rainfall from Wednesday's storm raised the threat of elevated bacteria levels at these locations and the closures were issued to protect public health.

Daily water testing will be conducted at these beaches until water quality levels are found and then the beaches will be reopened to swimming.

Testing is being conducted on Thursday and officials say if water quality has improved to acceptable standards then the beaches will re-open on Friday.
