Baseball Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn is dead at the age of 54. The long-time San Diego Padres outfielder  had been on medical leave since late March from his job as baseball coach at San Diego State. Gwynn had battled cancer since 2010.

The sweet-swinging left-hander racked up 3,141 hits during his illustrious 20-year Major League career.

The Padres released a statement saying "we are terribly sad to say goodbye to our teammate, our friend and a legend, Tony Gwynn. Rest in peace, Mr. Padre."

Tony Gwynn was inducted into the Baseball Hall-of-Fame in 2011.
