New Bedford firefighters made quick work of a fire on Sherman Street near the South End.

Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the fire started at the rear of the two-story home at 33 Sherman Street at around noon Wednesday. "It appears we had a fire (that) started in a barrel on the backside of the house. On arrival we had flames from the ground level all the way up to the gutter line on the building," said Gomes.

It's not known if the fire in the barrel was started on purpose or was ignited due to environmental factors.

Gomes says the fire damaged only the exterior of the home, burning up a significant amount of siding.

Nobody was hurt as a result of the fire.

Gomes estimates damage to the home at around $25,000.

The cause remains under investigation.
