A former teller at a North Attleborough bank has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for embezzling almost $378,000 from elderly customers.

Maria DaSilva, of Smithfield, R.I., was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Boston to two years and three months behind bars, three years of probation, and ordered to pay full restitution. Prosecutors say the 54-year-old DaSilva stole from the accounts of three elderly customers at the Citizens Bank inside a grocery store from February 2008 to January 2012 by forging withdrawal slips.

DaSilva's lawyer says the embezzlement was not motivated by greed, drugs or gambling, but by financial hardship. The lawyer said DaSilva's husband lost his job and she became the family's sole income. He says she is remorseful.
