A New Bedford man is under arrest following an attempted break-in at a Family Dollar store in downtown New Bedford.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says that around 2:30 a.m. Friday police received a call about suspicious activity near the Purchase Street store.

When officers arrived they reported that 30-year-old Quiton Chapple had just smashed through the front door and was in the process of entering the store.

He was arrested without incident. During a search officers also found prescription Xanax and a small amount of crack cocaine in Chapple's position.

He was arraigned in New Bedford District Court Friday morning on charges of Attempted breaking and entering in the daytime, Malicious destruction of property, Illegal possession class B cocaine, and Illegal possession class E Xanax.
