An assault complaint in Mansfield leads to a police chase that ends on I-495 in Raynham.

Mansfield Police say that at around 9 a.m. Thursday a 911 caller reported an assault in progress in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Francis Ave.

The two people involved in the incident were seen getting into a silver Toyota Corolla and the officers made a car stop.

Police say both occupants, identified as 29-year-old Stephen Poirier and 60-year-old William Poirier, were known to responding officers, who were told that the vehicle had a revoked registration and an active warrant was out for one of the occupants.

A brief struggle ensued with Stephen Poirier as officers tried to take him into custody, during which time William Poirier drove away from the scene.

Norton Police then spotted the vehicle in town and began pursuing it.

The chase continued into Taunton and Raynham and was joined by police units from both towns along with units from the Massachusetts State Police.

Officers then deployed “stop sticks” causing the pursuit to end on I-495 SB in the area of Rt. 138 in Raynham.

William Poirier was taken into custody before being transported to Morton Hospital for an evaluation.

Stephen Poirier is being charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and active warrants.

William Poirier is being charged with operating a motor vehicle with revoked registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to obey police and disorderly conduct.
