New Bedford Police were called to the scene of an animal cruelty case.

Chief Joseph Cordeiro tells WBSM News that officers responded to 41 Ellen St. around 9 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports about the location from the health department and animal control.

Cordeiro says officers arrived on scene to find numerous animals that were being neglected.

"We have nine dogs, there were some rodents, iguanas, reptiles, so quite the variety," said Cordeiro

One person was arrested and is being charged with three counts of cruelty to animals, two counts of failure to secure a large capacity firearm, and six counts of failure to secure a non-large capacity firearm.

Cordeiro says all the animals have been secured and were taken to a rescue location.
