A community activist in New Bedford has asked community leaders to consider creating a toy and replica gun buyback program in the city.

During a recent interview on WBSM's Brian Thomas Show, John Andrade said many toy guns, starter pistols, and BB guns look like the real thing, and can lead to confrontations with police sometimes with tragic consequences.

Andrade thinks those types of guns should be off the streets. "Its not dangerous because if your kid pulls the trigger nothing's going to happen because its a toy, but nobody knows that, until its too late," said Andrade.

Andrade says he's spoken to the Police Chief and Rev. David Lima of the Interchurch Council about a buyback program for toy and replica guns in New Bedford.
