Anyone under 18 will be barred from buying electronic cigarettes in Massachusetts and the liquid and gels used in the cigarettes will have to be sold in child-resistant packaging.

Those are some of the regulations given final approval by Attorney General Maura Healey's office.

The regulations also prohibit the promotional giveaway or free distribution of e-cigarettes and require that they be kept out of the reach of customers and in a location only accessible to store employees.

Healey said the growth of the electronic cigarette market poses a public health risk and the regulations filed Friday are aimed at reducing the use of e-cigarettes by young people.

The regulations _ except for the child resistant packaging requirement _ take effect Sept. 25.

The packaging requirement is effective March 15, 2016.  (Associated Press)
