The man found not guilty by reason of insanity for the murder of an Acushnet middle school nurse was released from custody this past April.

The Bristol County District Attorney's office confirms that David Taber was released from Bridgewater State Hospital on April 26th, after a failed attempt to recommit him.

DA spokeswoman Ashley Bendicksen says a judge denied the motion after a clinician determined Taber was not currently suffering from any mental illness.

Taber shot and killed Carole Day inside Ford Middle School on April 14, 1993 and was sentenced in 1995.

Taber returned to Acushnet after his release and Acushnet Police Chief Michael Alves says the release has created some uneasiness among townspeople.

Alves was a sergeant at the time of the incident and says he knew the victim and says "the pain for her family never goes away."
