Hundreds of Acushnet residents turned out Thursday night to honor former Ford Middle School Principal John Tavares and name their school's library after him.

He was praised for his service as an educator and his heroism during unimaginable horror. He was the principal of the Middle school in April of 1993 when a crazed intruder entered the school and fatally shot Carole Day, the school nurse.

Tavares courageously wrestled the gunman to the ground and prevented further tragedy. A newly erected sign bearing Tavares' name was placed above the library's entrance.

Tavares, who retired as principal 10 years ago, said it was a privilege to be honored by the school where he spent so many years.
