Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest travel time of the year and this year is proving to be no different.

John Paul, the Senior Traffic Safety Manager for AAA Northeast, tells WBSM's Brian Thomas his organization estimates that approximately 47 million people will be travelling at least 50 miles this year for the Thanksgiving holiday.

However, this year there will be some additional delays including airports which are seeing increased security after the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert due to terrorist threats following the paris attacks.

Paul says that travelers need pay closer attention to flight information and protocols than they may have in the past.

"Pay attention to the bottom of the ticket where it says 'domestic travel you know arrive two hours early, international travel arrive three hours early' and alot of people take that with a grain of salt, maybe not so much over the next 90 days," said Paul.

While flying or train travel may be a preferred mode of travel for many celebrating the holiday Paul says the automobile is often the more cost effective option.

"Right now where we're seeing gas prices in Massachusetts at an average of $2.12 per gallon," said Paul "so your car is still a very economical way to get around these days."

However, Paul says drivers, especially those using major highways should expect delays and give themselves plenty of time to reach their destinations.
