Police and Fire Departments in Dartmouth paid a final tribute to former Dartmouth Police Chief Stephen Soares during his funeral procession Wednesday.

Soares died on Christmas Eve after a long battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

Members of the Dartmouth Police Department lined up on Russells Mills Road to salute the hearse that carried Soares to the Evergreen Cemetery.

And Dartmouth Fire officials used ladder trucks to hang a large American Flag over the intersection of Russells Mills and Elm Streets.

Soares joined the Dartmouth Police Department in 1967. He was named chief in 1983 and served till 2000 before retiring. He later led Police Departments in Norwich and Windsor, Vermont.
