Since Boston area elected and appointed political gatekeepers keep playing dodge ball with South Coast Rail, basically chumming folks like bait on a hook, I have two ideas.

  1. Let's lobby the state delegation to have Greater New Bedford and Fall River residents stop getting taxed for a MBTA rail service that's not here. Our tax dollars funding MBTA service in other parts of the state, but not in the backyard, is taxation without representation!
  2. To the opposite extreme.  Opt to pay a hiker tax, maybe an additional half percent on the 6.25% sales tax, in our region, to fund South Coast Rail. It's money ardent advocates will agree to for their choo choo train.

Looking ahead five years, July 2021,  South Coast Rail is as dead as it ever was. My mind will change only after the shovels are in the ground. For the disbelieving, they deserve the tax relief, something I'm sure our local elected delegation will surely disapprove. To staunch supporters of local rail service, an increase local tax option can help cover the sure to be multiple billion dollar price tag.
