New Bedford High School is getting recognized for having some of the best students in the country.

Congressman William Keating visited the high school this morning to recognize three students for their recent achievements.

Dyllan Almeida was accepted into both the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Almeida, who chose the Air Force, says the process wasn't easy.

"A lot of the work isn't just school work. It's a lot of community service, volunteering, and coming out of your comfort zone to lead," Ameida said.

After studying at the Air Force Academy Prep School, class of 2013 graduate, Carlos Rivera, Jr. was also accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Before the presentation, Rivera gave Almeida some advice about life in the Air Force, and what he could expect.

Patricia Dias also received a special recognition from Congressman Keating. She was the winner of a Congressional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Competition.

School staff suggested Dias attempt the STEM after she developed an app to keep track of the high school store's stock. Dias said she plans to attend UMass Dartmouth for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Rep. Keating said their success proves that New Bedford High School can open doors for students.

"This country is in good hands. New Bedford is in good hands, and we are so proud to have three people like this as a representative for this school. It is Whaler's power and Whaler's pride. Today was a day of Whaler's pride," Keating said.
