Gardner Museum Exhibit Features Italian Masters

BOSTON (AP) — The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's new exhibit features works by Michelangelo, Donatello and other Italian Renaissance masters.

Many of the drawings and sculptures in the exhibit that opens Thursday have never before been on public display in the United States.

The exhibition brings together 39 drawings and a number of related sculptures by the masters, also including Cellini, Bandinelli, Giambologna, and Della Robbia.

This exhibition is the first to do an in-depth study of the multi-faceted relationship between drawing and sculpture in Renaissance Italy and is inspired by Bandinelli's self-portrait, which is part of the museum's permanent collection.

In his portrait, Bandinelli is not memorialized with one of his grand public monuments, but rather with a preparatory drawing of it.

The exhibit runs until Jan. 19.
