Fire officials say five people walked away unharmed from a weekend plane crash in Westport.

The fire department the small plane that took off from a private strip just after 7 a.m. Sunday.

According to the fire report, the single-engine 10-passenger plane failed to gain enough altitude during takeoff and crashed into a wooded area approximately 100 feet from the end of the airstrip.

The Standard-Times reports that the five people on board got out of the damaged plane before emergency responders arrived. They were examined by paramedics.

There was no fire, but some fuel leaked.

The town was waiting for an investigator from the Federal Aviation Administration to arrive at the scene. The names of the people on board have been withheld.
