Over fifty people participated in Saturday's "Buttonwood Hoopla", which marked the start of a vigorous fundraising campaign by the Friends of Buttonwood Park. The Friends are looking to raise $150,000 in order to replace the three aging basketball courts in the park.

Ward Five Councillor Jane Gonsalves says the basketball courts were a popular place to hang out when she was growing up in New Bedford.

The Friends are looking to replace the cracked courts, sub-par hoops, poor lighting, and rusted out bleachers with construction possibly beginning next spring.

The Friends will be sending out mailers and soliciting local businesses and organizations for funds to replace the thirty year old courts.
